Where we
come from
BIOCA was founded by a small, yet diverse team, with the purpose of contributing to the world of sustainable design. Our approach, using “low-tech” materials in a “hi-tech” robotic and automated environment, is unique to the hempcrete industry as part of the bio-based intervention in the global construction sector, which calls for radical and scalable solutions.
BIOCA is a South African company with a head office in Johannesburg and a secondary office in Hengelo, The Netherlands.

Hempcrete
BIOCA utilizes hemplime, a bio-aggregate-based material, made by combining water, lime and hemp hurd (a product of the stem of the industrial hemp plant).
The All-In-One panel
This is intelligently cast with BIOCA’s distinctive automated equipment onto timber frames. BIOCA uses the highest quality formulated lime product range, expertly developed for our method of application, and guaranteeing 100 life cycle.
Benefits of our hempcrete
Breathable
Due to the unique hygrothermal properties of hemplime, it is able to store heat and moisture, regulating the comfort and heating needs of the interior.
Mechanical Strength
As hempcrete is a non-structural material, we have paired it with a structural timber frame to carry the load.
Durability
Even though it is a bio-based material, it is resistant to biological degradation -microbial attack (mould), by helping the home breathe
Lightweight
Hempcrete has a bulk density of 330kg/m3, a mere 1/14th of the weight of concrete
Non-combustible
Due to the lime in the mixture, not only is hemplime completely non-combustible, but also does not emit smoke or toxic fumes when exposed to open fire. A 4 hour fire rating is easily achieved.
Thermally Insulating
Hemp lime has a thermal conductivity of 0.076. Meaning, a 330mm wall achieves an R-Value of 4.3, whereas a concrete wall of the same thickness would only achieve an R-Value of 0.3
Design for Manufacture, Assembly, and Disassembly (DFMA+D)
Through automation, we have industrialized the traditional method of casting hempcrete. We specialize in DFMA+D to ensure that our products are of superior quality. In addition, DFMA+D promotes waste minimization, improved accuracy, increased speed of delivery, and ease of scalability.

1 DESIGN
Professional consultancy on structural, architectural and service integration of the building; software conversion of design into a panelized solution ready for 3D printing
2 MANUFACTURE
Off-site manufacturing of BIOCA panels for walls, floors and roofs, ready for either finishing in the factory or on site (project specific)
3 DELIVER
Panels picked up from factory according to ‘Just-in-Time’ delivery to site in a specific order for optimal assembly
4 ASSEMBLE
Quick & efficient assembly (and later disassembly). Little waste produced and little noise disturbance to neighbourhood
